History of Stained Glass

The history of stained glass is a long and varied one, often shrouded in secrecy.

Historians think that  it was possibly the ancient egyptians who first started to develop the method of creating colored glass, in the form of jewelley and decorations. Although on a very small scale, they understood the priciples of heating sand particles to a molten state and then adding certain chemicals to the liquid to create different colors before the material hardened.

Later the Europenas would expand on this knowledge and creat much larger pieces of stained glass, in flat panels which would become so strongly linked with our images of churches and cathedrals.
